Every morning Iris and I wake between 5am and 6am. I let her have free-bum time whilst she lies on her change mat on the floor and I Skype Mum. Then she gets dressed and then, within an hour, she gets grisly and it is time to go back to sleep. Her first nap lasts about an hour and I usually sleep with her.
When she wakes next she sits in her bouncer in the bathroom whilst I have a bath and read to her. Right now I am reading ‘The Master of Ballantrae’. She enjoys it until she doesn’t and then I have to quickly jump out of the bath to grab her. It is relaxing to a point.
Then Iris is ready for her second nap, which usually lasts about two hours. Whilst she is asleep I tidy the kitchen ready for cooking and put the dishwasher on (which creates background noise for a longer nap too). I start preparing vegetables or any other foods that I already have at home and can prepare.
When we return home, Iris goes in her bouncer or in her pram outside next to the back door where I can see her to explore the safer cooking utensils and ingredients that she won’t try to eat or choke on or make a big mess with eg a carrot or parsnip or lettuce leaf. I finish the dinner and then set the table either inside or outside.
Before Luke gets home I serve up and make a pot of tea or get some drinks ready (last night it was limoncello in the garden) and we all eat dinner together.
All this might sound pretty mundane but to me it is everything. I put so much love into the food that we eat and those meals are the highlight of each day.
